is a surprisingly mature depiction of friendship.

Not every meaningful friend makes your life peaceful

Some friends comfort you.

Others challenge you.

Paris challenges almost everyone.

For Rory, that eventually becomes useful.

Rory is accustomed to encouragement.

Stars Hollow adores her.

Lorelai believes in her.

Her grandparents celebrate her potential.

Paris does something different.

Paris assumes Rory is capable enough to compete with.

That is almost a compliment in Paris Geller language.

Their friendship begins with rivalry because they recognize something in each other

Both girls are intelligent.

<p class="has-medium-font-size universities.

Obsessed with preparation in different ways.

Rory presents ambition quietly.

Paris announces hers like a military operation.

But they are playing similar games.

That makes them natural rivals.

Eventually, it also makes them uniquely capable of understanding each other.

Then something unexpected happens

They begin sharing life rather than simply competing over it.

School.

Relationships.

College.

Roommates.

Career fears.

Personal disasters.

Paris repeatedly appears at moments when Rory’s carefully organized life becomes less organized.

And Rory repeatedly becomes one of the few people capable of translating Paris back into ordinary human language.

Paris and Rory both enter a social environment that does not naturally belong to either of them.

<p class="has-medium-font-size experiment.

Study the culture.

Attempt the experience.

“I’m up for new things.”

Of course she is.

Paris can turn anything into a project.

Rory and Paris give each other permission to be different versions of themselves

This is an underrated part of their friendship.

Paris pushes Rory toward greater assertiveness.

Rory provides Paris with emotional stability.

Paris can be chaotic because Rory often remains calm.

Rory can hesitate because Paris rarely does.

They do not balance each other because they are opposites.

They balance each other because they exaggerate different traits the other person sometimes needs.

And they do not require constant emotional reassurance

That makes their friendship unusual for television.

There are relatively few scenes where Rory and Paris sit down and formally declare how important they are to each other.

Instead, importance accumulates.

They keep appearing.

Keep talking.

Keep fighting.

Keep reconnecting.

Keep knowing things about each other.

That is how many long friendships actually work.

Paris may understand Rory’s ambition better than almost anyone

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async"
