wp-block-paragraph\">Then comes the correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Then the defensiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Then the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That rhythm tells us almost everything about their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai has spent years expecting Emily to judge her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Emily has spent years expecting Lorelai to make everything about their conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Both women enter conversations carrying an emotional history the current topic cannot contain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">So even small conversations become loaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai\u2019s response to this childhood is understandable:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">She will do the opposite with Rory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">But needs calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai also needs calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Neither has any available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That feels true to their relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">They often regulate each other emotionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">When one is stable, the other can fall apart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But what happens when both need support at the same time?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That is where \u201cbest friends\u201d becomes complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">A child\u2014even an older child\u2014sometimes needs a parent who can temporarily carry more of the emotional weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai cannot always do that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Not because she does not love Rory enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Because she is still a person with her own panic, history and fears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lorelai seems more cautious than Lorelai herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That makes Lorelai\u2019s parenting philosophy appear almost effortless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Trust Rory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Talk openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Make jokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Let her make choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">But a parenting philosophy is easiest when your child keeps making choices you already approve of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The real test comes later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Rory develops her own romantic life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Her own ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Her own interpretation of Emily and Richard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Her own relationship with wealth and privilege.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Her own mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly independence becomes less theoretical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai has to decide whether \u201cI trust you to make your own decisions\u201d still applies when Rory\u2019s decision hurts, scares or disappoints her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That is much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lorelai and Emily share one uncomfortable instinct<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Write it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Protect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Remember it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Do it correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai finds that suffocating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Yet she sometimes develops her own version of the same instinct with Rory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Not through rules and etiquette.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Through emotional closeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Emily wants access to Lorelai\u2019s decisions because she believes family gives her that right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai sometimes assumes she should have access to Rory\u2019s inner life because they have always told each other everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The methods are very different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The pain of being excluded can be surprisingly similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Rory growing up forces Lorelai to redefine love<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">The hardest stage of parenthood is what you think?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Let them make the mistake?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">That uncertainty is everywhere in Lorelai and Rory\u2019s later relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Lorelai cannot remain Rory\u2019s mother in exactly the same
